About Us

History of the Department:
The department was started in June 1952 with affiliation from the then University of Bombay. B. G. General Degree for Geography and B. Sc. Geography as a subsidiary subject (with 20 students) were the courses taught.
Principal C. B. Joshi was the pioneer who laid the foundation of this department in this university. He was Principal and Professor of Geography and Economics from 1952 and worked in this college for a period of three years.
The pay scale in those times was as follows: Rs. 300-15-450 for Professors Rs. 200-15-350 for Lecturers Rs. 150 for Demonstrators
Prof. B. Arunachalam was appointed as a lecturer in 1954. In the year 1956, Modern Education Society had applied for an extension of affiliation for teaching Geography as a principal subject for B.Sc. and for a post of one lecturer in Geography and a part time demonstrator which was to be started in June 1956. In that year 10 students opted for Geography as a Principal subject and 20 students opted for Geography as a subsidiary subject.
Prof. L. S. Bhat was appointed as a lecturer in June 1956 and Mr. P. K. Bengeri was appointed as a part-time demonstrator.
Current Status of the Department: Dr. Deepali Bhide was appointed as a lecturer in November, 2004 and is currently permanent faculty of the department. The second post in the department is an Ad-hoc post. Following subjects are taught by the faculty:

RESEARCH: Dr. Deepali Bhide

  • Presented a Research Project at TH Level under the discipline Humanities, Languages and Fine Arts- Titled ‘Impact of globalisation on the changing status of women – a case study’ in 11th Maharastra State Inter-University Research Convention AVISHKAR-2016 held from 27-29th January, 2017 at Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded, Maharashtra.
  • Presented a paper titled – ‘ to Public and Private Spaces-A case study of house wives in Mumbai Metropolitan Region’ at the 11th Dr. Mani Kamerkar Memorial National Seminar held on 23rd September 2017 organised by Department of History, Sathaye College, Mumbai.
  • Presented a paper titled ‘A woman’s quality of life and the complexities of power positions among the male and female genders-A case of Mumbai city’ at a National Conference on Dimensions of women empowerment held on 27th November, 2018 organised by Swami Vivekananda Night College of Arts and Commerce, Dombivli (E).
  • Chaired a session and presented a paper titled ‘Status of women from tribal areas of Vasai and Bhiwandi – An Overview’ in the National Conference on Contemporary Issues in Environment and Geography held on 9th March, 2019 organised by Acharya & Marathe College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Chembur, Mumbai.
  • Invited as a Resource Person at the National level workshop on ‘Research Techniques in Geography’ held on 9th and 10th December, 2019 organised by Department of Geography, University of Mumbai.
  • Invited as an Interviewer/Evaluator for Action Research for the Dr. Homi Bhabha Bal Vaidnyanik competition held on 16th February, 2020 organised by The Greater Bombay Science Teachers’ Association, Mumbai.
  • Dr. Deepali Bhide has also worked as a convener and organised the 14th National Conference on Wetlands and Biodiversity in association with Paryavaran Dakshata Mandal, Thane and Association of Teachers’ in Biological Sciences (ATBS). The conference was held in D. G. Ruparel College on 1st February, 2020.
  • Appointed as member of the Syllabus committee for framing the revised syllabus for FYBA/BSC SEM I/II PAPER NO. I and SYBA/BSC SEM III/IV PAPER NO. II/III with effect from Academic Year 2020-2021.
  • She has also contributed entries related to Geography for the Marathi Vishwakosh.
  • Co-author of a book titled ‘Human Geography’ published by Notion Press Media Private Limited in September, 2021 ISBN No. 9781685632045
  • Title of the paper: ‘Research Methodology in Gender Geography: A case of Greater Mumbai and its peri-urban area’ published in edited book - Application of research methods and techniques in Geography published by Universal Publishing House, Thane, ISBN No. 978-93-83342-63-1 Page Nos. 100-107.
  • Presented a paper titled ‘ The ‘Changing Status’ of women w.r.t. gentrified urban spaces of Mumbai’ in a Three Days International Conference on Language, Literature and Culture held from 23rd to 25th July, 2021 organised by Trinity College for Women, Namakkal, Tamil Nadu.

GENESIS

GENESIS-The Geography Association (EVOLVE, EXPERIENCE AND ENRICH)

  • GENESIS was started in the year 2005.
  • Aim: To give a resourceful exposure to the students about the existing and new developments in the subject.
  • Since its inception, the association has tried to conduct a number of programmes like talks and presentations by scientists and eminent personalities from the fields of Science, Geography, Environmental Science, etc.; field visits or excursions; screening of documentaries and discussions and so on.
